UN Environment Programme Recognizes 64-District Environmental Initiative from Bangladesh

In a landmark recognition for Bangladesh’s youth-led climate movement, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has officially acknowledged the “64 Awareness Events in a Single Day on June 5” initiative, organized under the leadership of Mission Green Bangladesh, as a part of the global celebration of World Environment Day 2025.

The initiative, which mobilized over 64 environmental organizations across all districts of the country, featured synchronized tree plantation drives, anti-plastic pollution campaigns, awareness rallies, and community engagements—all carried out on the same day in observance of World Environment Day.

In a message from UNEP, the organization expressed appreciation:

“On behalf of the United Nations Environment Programme, a heartfelt thanks is extended to you and your team for helping make World Environment Day 2025 truly memorable. The impact of your efforts will resonate far beyond this day—it helps shape how we live with, and care for, our shared planet. Keep up the important work—we look forward to seeing you next World Environment Day.”

This recognition marks one of the first instances where a civil society-led, nationwide grassroots environmental campaign from Bangladesh has been directly highlighted by UNEP as part of their global celebration.

Mission Green Bangladesh expressed gratitude to its strategic and co-organizing partners who made this milestone possible, including:

  • Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA)

  • Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS)

  • Center for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER), BRAC University

  • Youth Foundation of Bangladesh

  • Tarupallab, Swapnopuri Kalyan Sangstha, and

  • All 64 district-level partner organizations and thousands of dedicated volunteers.

Ahsan Rony, Executive Director of Mission Green Bangladesh, said:
“This recognition is not just about a single event—it’s a celebration of Bangladesh’s capacity to lead climate action from the grassroots. We are proud to be part of a new generation of environmental stewards committed to building a greener, cleaner and more resilient Bangladesh.”

This year’s campaign theme, “Say No to Plastic, Yes to Nature”, brought together citizens of all ages, especially youth and students, in a united call to reduce plastic use and restore ecological balance. The initiative also served as the launchpad for a long-term goal to implement similar activities in all 495 upazilas by October 2025.

With this international recognition, Mission Green Bangladesh and its partners reaffirm their commitment to climate justice, youth engagement, and building sustainable communities across the nation.
