Japan’s Fossil Fuel Investment in Bangladesh Faces Strong Protest from Climate Activists

Bangladesh is one of the four Asian countries where the Government of Japan and several Japanese institutions are investing in fossil fuel-based projects, including coal and gas infrastructure. In response to this environmentally destructive investment strategy, a series of global protests and awareness campaigns are taking place throughout June 2025, including in Bangladesh.

On June 17, 2025, a protest event featuring a demonstration, mime performance, and flash mob will be held at Shyamoli Park Field, Dhaka. The event is being jointly organized by 15 organizations, including:

  • Brighters

  • Center for Participatory Research and Development (CPRD)

  • Center for Atmospheric Pollution Studies (CAPS)

  • Organization for Climate Resilience and Environment Conservation (OCREC)

  • Sundarban and Coastal Protection Movement

  • Waterkeepers Bangladesh

The program is aimed at urging the Japanese government to cease investments in coal and gas-based projects in Bangladesh and beyond.

Notable environmental leaders and representatives attending the event include:
